Romeo Must Die was a subversive romantic comedy that broke the Asian male and black female pairing barrier. Cradle 2 the Crave was a geopolitical detective noir thriller, as it recognized Taiwan as a separate country in defiance of China. Kiss of the Dragon was a sophisticated heist film underlining domestic abuse as its motif, written and produced by the master Luc Besson. Finally, The One was an ahead-of-its-time sci-fi masterpiece that alluded to a Jet Li multiverse, which unfortunately never took off because the audience at the time was not ready for such an ambitious cross-over. Just because there were some fighting scenes dispersed throughout the four films does NOT mean they were "kung fu" movies.
